Alcohol Ink Techniques

This class came about thanks to a request from two of our regular croppers. Cathy and Lori wanted to learn more about alcohol inks, and how they could use them in their scrapbooks.

And so this class was born!

I plan on covering a lot of different techniques and applications using Ranger/Adirondack alcohol ink. We are going to play a lot on different mediums - plastic, glass, metal - and with different application tools.

I want to help you make the most of your supplies at home! I will show you how to make your own pattern paper, colourful embellishments, and enhance items you already own.

If you have any questions about alcohol inks, you should take this class!

If you went out and bought a bunch of bottles of ink and they have been collecting dust since then, you should take this class!

If you love to try new things and are ready to take your scrapbooking and art making to the next level, you should take this class!

I am so looking forward to showing you how to use alcohol inks to create amazing patterns on a variety of surfaces. Later, you can take those creations and make use of them as pattern paper or embellishments on your layouts and other crafty projects.

Inking Workshop

In case you haven't noticed, I rely heavily on my inks and stains and mist and sprays when scrapbooking. I love pulling out my tools and creating a special background before I even lay a piece of paper or photo down on the page. I'm taking this knowledge to the streets with my special "inking workshop", happening at Treasured Memories in November.

We'll spend a couple of hours playing with stencils, stains, inks and sprays. I've got a lot of techniques up my sleeves: layering, making your own stencils and stamps out of everyday objects, and how to get great splatters every time. I will walk you through the steps on a blank background, then let you try the technique yourself.

I like my "messy" workshops to be as laid back as possible, and are based around practice and experimentation in a relaxed and pressure-free environment! Come and play with my toys and see if you like them enough to take some of your own home with you. Or maybe you already own all this stuff, but have no idea what to do with it!

Mixed Media Canvas Class

I have been waiting and waiting for the new Crafter's Workshop stencils to come in, and now that they are finally here, I have used them to create this sweet and colourful canvas class!

During this fun class we will be turning one of these...

into something more like this...

I used the "Summer" stencil for my demo, but you will be able to choose whichever girl you like best to complete your canvas. I'm going to show you some creative ways to use your paper collection on a canvas project, with an assortment of paint techniques. I also want to get you a little more familiar with the basics of the "colour wheel"...your canvas will be full of the contrasting colours of your choice!

I created a second canvas to show you how versatile the stencils are, and another choice you will have at the workshop!

I created "Edith" using all the same techniques as "Summer" above - techniques we will cover in class - with a purple and yellow colour scheme instead. Remember that the patterns and colours can all be customized depending on the look you want for your lady!

Trends and Techniques Layout Class - Fall

This was meant to be a September TNT Class, but we ran out of days! These layouts are great for Back-to-School portraits, first day of school candids, and fall photo shoots. They are both bright and colourful, but one can be altered to suit a more vintage or distressed look.

This month we are focusing on "grid layouts" as our technique. These layouts are simple to start, and can be added on for more complexity. This is a great technique to have "under your belt" to help you start layouts when you're stuck!

Our Trends for the month are the new lines from Imaginisce and Authentique. Imaginisce is one of those 'tried-and-true' companies that have been around for what seems like forever, and continually puts out really cute and fun lines. Authentique is a very new company, but so far they have really lived up to their pedigree with some amazing and beautiful lines. We just received their Christmas line in the store, and it is simply amazing!

This month's Trends & Techniques layouts are inspired by all things summer! Spending time with friends and family, camping and BBQs, gardening and spending time enjoying the beautiful weather! I know we all find it hard to scrapbook during the summer, but we always come away from these precious months with more photos than we sometimes know what to do with!

Both layouts this month will help you scrapbook some major summer events with multiple photos per page, using great new paper lines and wonderful, colourful alcohol inks.

Techniques and Trends - June

Lisa's Techniques and Trends this month is all about embellishing with canvas!

For the past little while now, I have noticed more and more companies coming out with canvas embellishments. Canvas is a great material to use on our scrapbook layouts, as it is thin, easy to cut, and super fun to colour, paint, mist and emboss to create a unique embellishment!

I'm also trying to stick "on trend" with things like Washi Tape, Silhouettes, and Pinwheels. My paper selection this month reflects some of the colour and theme trends I've been noticing as well: vintage, grey, peach, and lots of lace. And I'm using some of the Tim Holtz dies and stains that are quite popular with the TM crowd!!

Wow! Can you believe that Summer is almost here! It seems like it was just yesterday that there was snow on the ground and hope in our hearts! HA! I love summer, and I love all the memories and events and fun times that are packed into the couple of months we actually experience summer in Edmonton! This mini is a great place to capture all those memories, and reminisce over them when the snow starts to fly again.

Join Lisa to create this one-of-a-kind 24-page Mini Album, using only two sheets of Simple Stories paper and some very creative embellishing. You will learn all sorts of great techniques to apply to other minis and your scrapbooking in general!

This month I decided I would give you a couple of insiders tips on using rub-ons. These are some of my favourite go-to scrapping supplies, but a lot of people just don't know where to start. I love displaying my son's school pictures around the house! It always amazes me to see how much he changes throughout the school year, and as he passes into the next grade. I also love looking back through my old school photos and memorabilia, and images from my parents and grandparents school days.

Join Lisa and create this beautiful and nostalgic Receipt Tray to showcase your favourite school memories. The clips allow you to switch out photos and memorabilia as the new school begins, and the neutral colours allow the focus to stay on your photos!

Trends and Techniques - March

Time for another TNT Class! This month we are are working with inks and masks! We will complete two 12x12 layouts in class that can each fit a couple of photos in a variety of sizes.

One of my favourite techniques right now is to make my own fun backgrounds using masks and ink.

One the first layout I've pulled out some new My Mind's Eye and on the second I'm using some of the most popular Basic Grey paper I've seen in a long time! Lots of fun spring colours and inspiration in amongst all this cold weather we've been having.

Triptych...say What!?

A Triptych is pretty much a work of art divided into three panels, which are then hinged together and folded. Last year, the magazine Cloth Paper Scissors put out a call for Triptychs that used the same image and colours on each panel and I was so inspired by the response, I filed all the info away in the recesses of my brain for a class later. And that later has come!

We are going to create three beautiful panels based on Tim Holtz's fabulous caged bird die. I'll show you a couple of great techniques for creating a rich and textured background, and we'll have fun with feathers, tags, ink, flowers and tape! I had so much fun making these panels...I hope to share some of that with you!

Art Journaling: Getting Started

This class is perfect for those ladies out there that buy out all the Cloth Paper Scissors issues at TM before I can get my hands on them! I think "art journaling" is a great way to test out new ideas and techniques, and sketch out projects in a "no holds barred" sort of way.

But for scrapbookers, starting one can sometimes be intimidating: "do I have the right supplies?...what topics do I cover?...I don't consider myself "artistic"..." are all thoughts that can run through your head, preventing you from exploring this most basic and very fulfilling art form.

I am here to show you that not only does it not have to be intimidating, but that it can also be very rewarding!

In class, I will show you a simple way to build your own journal, and add to it using regular scrapbooking supplies, and other bits and bobs you might have laying around your crafting space, and create something meaningful and fun in which you will always find inspiration!

- An old magazine, catalogue, or other inspirational images from home

** An old, hardcover book. We will be using this to create the front and back covers for our journals. Choose one with a theme, or colour that you find interesting or inspiring. I like Value Village for the selection and price. If you don't bring one, I will have a couple extras to choose from.

Optional

- Craft mat (Ranger, Tattered Angels, etc.)

- Black permanent ink pad

- Your favourite stamp

- An apron or paint smock

I will cover lots of basic paint and inking techniques, and show you how to add collages and doodles to your completed backgrounds. And the binding technique for this album will allow you to keep adding pages as you go!

This is a self-directed class, in which you will complete as many pages as you want to, in the style of your choosing. I will show you lots of fun techniques, and help you with some journaling prompts and ideas to keep you going at home. That being said, we are not creating a set project, and your finished book might look nothing like the demo pictured above.

Word of the Year - Canvas Workshop

Many years ago Ali Edwards started a trend in scrapbooking, and some of us have jumped in with both feet and never looked back! Before the end of the year, she chooses a word (or a word chooses her!) and that is the word that will be her focus and direct her year to come. It is a wonderful way to have a "resolution" without making a to-do list! A word can be a powerful tool, a single image or thought to focus on, and direct your energy toward throughout the upcoming year.

Here is her post for 2011. You really need to read this to fully appreciate the power of "One Little Word". And here are the links to the previous years' posts: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.

I tend to over think things, and make endless lists, so I usually end up with a phrase of the year! And this year I wanted to share this amazing and powerful concept with all of our Treasured Memories extended family.

I am holding a "Word of the Year" workshop on January 22nd. Please come and join me as we explore the idea that "one little word" can change and direct and influence and inspire your life and your goals for the New Year!

Here is my completed canvas for 2011...

Each student will be given a blank canvas, letters, collage elements and paint. I will help you explore your word and what you want to convey with your canvas, so it can serve as a reminder and an inspiration to keep your word close to you throughout the year.

What would a class be without a little learning!?

I want to show you how to combine collage and paint techniques (including water resist) to create a beautiful and meaningful backdrop for your word (or phrase). And give you some tips on using 3D ephemera on a canvas. I will have lots of fun supplies on hand, but I need you to bring the following...

We are slowing down our classes for the Christmas Season, which is busy enough as it is, but will be back in full swing come January with more classes from our Favourite Teachers!

"Home Sweet Home" Christmas Layout Class

This time around we're keeping it simple with a lovely Christmas-inspired two-page layout. This is a toned down Christmas feast, with just enough red, poinsettias and sparkles to make your family photos shine!

I've included some fun stamps with this layout that uses a variety of Christmas lines: Basic Grey, My Mind's Eye, Teresa Collins, Making Memories, Prima, and Girls' Paperie.

And our fun, yet simple "snow" technique involves a great new spray ink that's my new best friend!

Retro Technophile
In this class we are making a fun summer keepsake using old floppy diskettes!!! As well as using some random bits and bobs and some left overs from your stash, I'll be pulling out my trusty Martha butterfly punch, tiny letters, and bling! Technique-wise I'll show you a simple way to use alcohol ink, some chipboard decorating techniques, and how to make a fun doodled frame with the fabulous Sakura pens. When all is said and done, you'll get to take home a one-of-a-kind mini album to fill with summer memories, inspiration, or whatever else you've got kicking around at home!!

Summer Greetings
One of my favourite albums right now is one I made using leftover greeting cards from work! I'll show you a simple, but effective way to hand-bind an album, some spray ink techniques using stencils, as well as how to make a cute fabric flower to decorate the cover. We'll be using a bunch of fun, yet basic elements to create a unique and special book. I used mine to document a great spring road trip, but this would work great to store memories and memorabilia from a birthday, anniversary, or just a special summer day!

Something Most Lovely
In this class, we're going to take a simple children's board book and create a mixed media masterpiece! I'll show you two different transfer techiques, give you some basic tips on creating collage and art journal pages on a small scale, and show you how to use a variety of flat embellishments to create an amazing painted book! I'm also going to pull out the stamps, stencils, masks and spray ink for this guy...let no technique go untouched!!

Messy Mini Art Journal

Join Lisa for this creative and inspiring class, and create a mini art journal. Using a card and envelope set, some paint, Glimmer Mist, masks and some "old school" product, Lisa will help you create something special to hold your cherished memories, hopes, dreams and all that good stuff!

Beginner Series Classes

I have finally finished planning for the Beginner Series Classes!

There will be SIX classes, focusing on different themes and geared toward the Beginner Scrapbooker. Read on for more information.

Pay special attention to the "please bring" section of each class. You will have the opportunity to practice your new-found skills and complete three single page layouts per class. I have included a list of photo sizes to bring to each class in order to finish the layouts and better demonstrate some of the techniques!

Please Note:
- All Classes run Thursdays, from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Specific dates for each class are listed below.
- There are two dates listed for each session. This is for scheduling only. The same information is covered on each date. There is a maximum number of 8 students per class. This helps me give each student more one-on-one instruction. Please register early to avoid disappointment.
- Each class is $30, but if you sign up and pay in advance for three or more, you will receive a discount of 15%. Members receive their 15% on individual classes, as per usual, but no additional discount for buying multiples.
- A "worksheet" is provided in each class, listing the topics and techniques we covered in the class, so you don't have to try and remember it all once you get home!!

In this class I will cover the "Basic Tool Kit" to help you get started in scrapbooking. You will have the opportunity to try out different adhesives, trimmers and punches, as well as the Crop-A-Dile and Slice die cut machine.

Layout Design

In this class I will cover how to crop photos, how to create a basic layout design that can be easily repeated and added to, and "the rule of three". You will also learn how to "frame" your photos without matting them, and how to cover an "ugly" part of your photo without always trimming it off!

- 1 (one) vertical 4x6 photo, and 2 (two) photos that can be cropped to 2x2, of the same theme/event
- 2 (two) horizontal 4x6 photos of the same theme/event
- 1 (one) vertical 4x6 photo and 2 (two) photos that can be cropped smaller (~4x4) of the same theme/event

Stamping and Inking
April 22nd or June 3rd

I will show you three ways to use stamps on your layouts: as an embellishment, to create a background & to make a spot for your journaling. There are as many ways to use stamps as there are stamps themselves, so we are only doing some basic stamping here! But you will get to use embossing powder, glitter and a variety of brands of stamps and ink.

Please Bring:
- 2 (two) vertical 4x6 photos of the same theme/event
- 2 (two) horizontal 4x6 photos of the same theme/event
- 1 (one) vertical 4x6 photo, 1 (one) horizontal 4x6 photo, and 1 (one) photo that can be cropped smaller (~4x4) of the same theme/event

Basic Embellishments
April 29th or June 10th

Since I can't possibly cover all the known embellishments, I am going to show you how to use some of the basic ones, and how to incorporate them on your layouts. These include: brads, eyelets, buttons, stickers and sticker letters. If you are looking for more advanced embellishments, please check out Embellishments Part Two, offered later in the session!

Please bring:
- 2 (two) photos cropped down to 4x4 (we can crop them in class)

This can sometimes be the hardest part of a layout, even for the most seasoned scrapper! I will give you some tips on getting started with writing on your layout, how to accommodate the lengthy passage, as well as which tools you'll need for this (including a pen demo...ooh la la!)

- 2 (two) horizontal 4x6 photos of the same theme/event
- 3 (three) vertical 4x6 photos of the same theme/event

Now we'll cover the more "advanced" embellishments, including chipboard, flowers, rhinestones, rub ons and ribbon. I'll even show you some fun ways to use ribbon that you might not have thought of! Valentine's Canvas Hanger

Saturday, February 6th

In this class we are making a fun love-themed canvas hanger just in time for Valentine's Day using some fun fabric products from Prima and Pink Paislee. And just in case you want to give this special project to a special someone, Lisa will show you how to make a fun Valentine with some of the latest pink and red embellishments hitting the stores!

Students should bring:

- scissors

- a photocopy of a photo of a loved one, or your, or a beloved place, etc. It can be colour OR black and white. Size should be less than or equal to 4x4 (you can print a larger size and trim it down in class). We will be using a transfer technique to put this photo onto a piece of sticky back canvas, so I don't want to see any original photos!

Techniques and Trends Covered:

1. Fabric scrapbooking

2. Using Iron Ons by Donna Downey

3. Transferring a photo onto sticky back canvas to use on a layout or project

4. Using a dry-brush technique with stamping ink and a mask to create a unique background

Calendar Workshop UPDATE

I have finally taken some decent pictures of all the layouts in the Calendar, so I'm going to post them below, with an update on the status of the kits.

The kits will be availble to purchase in store (or by phone) next week. I'm hoping to have everything done so they can go on sale December 1st with the other TM Kits. $100 will buy you one kit and if you want to attend the workshops there are still two left on the schedule. I will complete any technique-heavy layouts with you in class, and send the rest home with the instructions for you to complete on your own time.

Calendar Class

At last! Better late than never, and all that jazz!

The Treasured Memories Calendar Class is back...and it's going to be a little different from last year. Keep reading for more information, or give the store a ring! Instead of doing specific theme for each month, I decided to keep the same general feel throughout...and I know how much our Treasured Memories shoppers like "vintage" based on how fast those darn kits sell out every month!

Running FOUR Wednesdays: November 18, 25 & December 2, 9 from 6 - 9pm (each night). These aren't nights we are normally open to the public, so there won't be any distractions, and if you come in before the class starts you can get some shopping in as well! We'll try to finish 3 layouts per class, but I know that some people work slower than others. I'm including full instructions with coloured pictures (ooh aah!) so you can finish at home if you don't finish all the layouts in class.

This class will operate like our store kits, where you more product than what you pay for. I figure the calendar has at least $130 worth of product in it, but we're only charging you $100(+GST) for the entire thing! And I hope our members understand that their class discount won't apply to this class because of the amazing discount on product we're offering!

You can register at any point during the classes and attend any or all of the sessions at the store. We will be using extra product like Glimmer Mist, embossing powder, etc. that won't be available in the kits, so coming to the class is great if you don't have access to those things at home.

Kits will be available after the last class (Dec. 9) and are the same price as the class. If I have 10 people sign up for the class, no kits will be available. You can reserve a kit by calling the store, and then we won't sell that spot in the class.

Please bring your basic tool kit to the class, including your trimmer, scissors, basic adhesive & glue dots (if you have them). Everything else is provided.

Getting Started...Wedding!

At Treasured Memories we find that a lot of our customers get started in scrapbooking with their wedding album, and it can be a daunting task! Join Lisa for a little help getting started and some tips to stay on track to finish. Even if you have been scrapping for a while this class is super helpful if you want to do something extra special for this special event.

Students should bring:
- Basic tool kit (trimmer, scissors, adhesive)
- Your album and any supplies already purchased. It you are literally starting from scratch, we always have lots to choose from
- Copies of your wedding photos (please don't bring your originals, as we might have to trim some of the pictures down)
- Any keepsakes or extra items you want to include in your book

You will learn:
1. How to choose coordinating paper
2. Page layout design
3. Creating a theme & overall design for your album and how to stick to it throughout

The number of layouts you complete in this class is up to you. There isn't a set number to complete, and I totally encourage people to work at their own pace. That being said, some students work faster than others and will finish more layouts. On the Saturday offering of this class, there will be lots of extra time after the class to hang out and apply what you have just learned! And our classroom is open whenever the store is open so you can come back and work when it's most convenient for you.

A Year in MY Life

This mini album/calendar is designed with YOU in mind. It's a place for you to scrapbook about yourself and what's going on in your life! Forget the kids, or the hubby, or the pets, or the grandkids for a minute and focus on the most important person in your life: YOU! In the class, we will complete the bare bones of the album with some embellishment, and you can take it home and add pictures and journaling as the year goes on. It's a great place to record your goals, accomplishments, special events, etc. that maybe wouldn't normally make it into your other scrapbooking!

Please have in mind the colour you want for your album when you sign up for the class. Here are your choices: green, burgundy/red, turquoise (as pictured), pink, or brown.

Double or Nothin'

A great new "trend" in the scrapbooking world is creating one album with multiple sized layouts within it! This is great for people who like to scrapbook 8.5x11, 8x8, 6x6, 12x12, etc., but don't want to have separate albums for each size. What's even better is that there's a company that has made this totally possible with little extra effort...all you need is an American Crafts 12x2 D-ring album! Their page protectors come in a variety of sizes and the holes will always match up! It's a no-brainer!

In this layout class, we are creating a double-page layout with a twist: one page will be 12x12 and the other 6x12!! Crazy? I know! You get all the benefit of a double-page layout, but with a little added interest! Even if you don't normally scrap this way, it will sure get your creative juices flowing! And the new Rose Moka paper line, with a little Basic Grey and Hambly thrown in for good measure, is sure to impress! And if you're not keen on the 6x12 second page, you have the option of doing a second 12x12 layout!

For this class you will need: trimmer, scissors, adhesive.

So I'm starting to look at New Classes for the New Year, and I would like your input in choosing what makes the cut!

Would you like to see more technique classes, like embossing, painting, stamping, etc.?

Or perhaps some classes based on a product line that you've seen in the store and really want to use on a layout? Like an all Heidi Swapp class, or Doodlebug, or Riff Raff Designs.

Or would you prefer just to have some nice layouts, with no theme in particular??

So, I was waiting so patiently for the new American Crafts to come in so I could do our first "All the Rage" class using some of their new goodies! But they were late, and the class was coming up fast, so I get to use the cool new Glitz instead! Nothing wrong with that!!

We're completing one double page layout in this class, using the latest "girlie" paper from Glitz, some rad bling words and pink pearls from Kaiser Crafts, Riff Raff Designs chipboard shapes, and Prima flowers. Altered Art: Vacation Memories Pizza Box

In this class I will show you how to turn a simple pizza box into a beautiful keepsake for all your vacation memories! Using a 7 Gypsies "naked" Pizza Box, we will be adding paper, ribbon, chipboard and sticker letters to create one-of-a-kind storage for all those brochures and pamphlets and ticket stubs we collect while on vacation, but can never bring ourselves to throw away! Or you can store your souvenirs, collected sea shells and rocks or post cards here. The sky's the limit!

I will also teach you how to make a little notebook to take with you on vacation to jot down all those exciting things that happened to you! This comes in super handy when you want to add some detailed journaling to your vacation layouts once you get home.

This class features product from 7 Gypsies, American Crafts, Riff Raff Designs, Prima Marketing, Jenni Bowlin, Hambly and more!! I'll even show you how to jazz up your paper flowers with a little Glimmer Mist!!

Right now, all that has been posted is today's Techneek of the Week...but soon you will be able to find my weekly "techneeks" along with a project created by one of the talented ladies on the TM Design Team. These will range from layouts, to mini albums, to home decor projects...whatever turns our fancy that week! Included will be an instruction sheet and supply list and lots of pictures of said project. We hope that this will continue to inspire you and keep your scrapbooking "evolving". Nothing wrong with trying something new!!

Techneek of the Week - Scrapbooking "On the Go"

This week's technique is inspired by an upcoming class...Altered Art runs August 4th (that's a holiday!) in the afternoon and we are making an altered pizza box and journal to store all of your VACATION MEMORIES. Today, I am going to show you how to create and "ON-THE-GO" scrapbook to take with you when you go on vacation, or to the lake, or wherever. With a minimal amount of supplies you can combine your travel journal with a mini album and after adding some photos when you get home, you have a COMPLETED PROJECT dedicated to your trip. And this makes it easier to do full pages after the fact because you have all your info in one place.

Pictured below are a couple of "on-the-go" scrapbooks that I have completed on past trips. Last year the fam and I went to Kelowna for a week (mmm...beach) and this spring we went to sunny Southern California with my in-laws to watch my brother-in-law compete in his first marathon. Even though these were two totally different trips with different amounts of free-time (aka scrapbooking time!) I was still able to create something that I enjoy and will keep forever and ever!

The top one is a 7 Gypsies mini album that I bought here at the store. It has nice neutral ivory cardstock pages and tabs along the top. The chipboard cover allows for more decoration (if you choose) when you get home. I didn't do anything to either of my journals before I left. Better to have something simple that can pack away nicely and then leave the fancy stuff for when you get home. I am planning on leaving this guy plain on the outside, aside from the rad 7 Gypsies knob!

The second journal is actually an artist's sketchbook I bought at and art supply store. It is still a nice sturdy coil-bond notebook and since it is meant for sketching, the paper inside is heavy-weight enough to allow me to glue and staple brochures and tickets to it without losing it's integrity.

Remember, when choosing a notebook/mini-album to take along you should look for something small enough to fit comfotably in your luggage or purse, but substantial enough to allow for you add things and write all that you want to write. You might want to pick one with more pages if you are going for a long trip (week plus), or if you want to add more photos when you get home.

As you can see, I did a lot of journaling...essentially documenting the trip as I went. Each evening (and sometimes during longer car trips!) I would dedicate some time to journaling about the day and adding some "found items" as I went along. I kept any maps, tickets, tourist brochures that I picked up during the day and cut and pasted what would fit in my journal. I always find it so hard to incorporate these things into my scrapbook layouts after the fact, and instead of just sticking them in a page protector at the back of my album, this is a nice way to display them. They also add a little extra decoration to your pages, so you don't have to bring as many supplies!

I purposely left space in my journal to add photos when I got home. I even wrote in the space which photos I wanted there. For example, in my Kelowna book I would journal along part of the page and leave the rest for photos...which works because my book is large enough. For my California journal, which has smaller pages, I left entire pages blank so I would have room to add lots of photos.

And this, my friend's, is all that I took with me! Pens, adhesive (glue stick or stapler work great!) and scissors (don't take on the plane!) are essential. Stamps are a nice addition, as you can pack a couple of shapes, an acrylic block and some ink pads and really get some "bang for your buck." Stars are pictured here, but labels, swirls, numbers, etc. would also do really nicely. I took 7 Gypsies labels with me to Kelowna and Scenic Route lady and gentleman with me to California. And if you bring coloured ink pads instead of just black, you get some added colour as well! I also like to take some simple label stickers (the ones pictured are Prima), in a sheet that I can cut to fit. All of these guys fit in my handy-dandy Spongebob Squarepants pencil case, along with my journal and I can pack that along with me on the road or the plane and it's at-hand whenever I have the inkling to create!

And here are some examples of things we carry that would be great to bring along, if you want some extra things to embellish as you go! But remember, you don't want to bring too much stuff and get overwhelmed. This is meant to be a simple, portable project, something that can be added to once you get home from your trip. So maybe if you really want to get creative with this book, leave more space to add these rad travel embellishments when you get home and add your photos.

Techneek of the Week

Welcome to a new segment I hope to bring to the Classes Blog on a semi-regular basis. I'm always working on new things, and some techniques the rest of the girls and I figure out just don't make it into classes! But I still want to pass on the stuff we learn...so you can skip all the hard steps of figuring things out and just reap the benefits!!! I hope you find some inspiration here, and have some fun getting your Mojo working!!

Techneek of the Week #1

This week I was playing with ideas for the "Environmentally Friendly Scrapbooking" class, and I thought it would be nice to share some things I came up with that you can use in your scrapbooking everyday to make the most out of your supplies and be a little "greener."

These two pages share the same basic layout, but with one big difference. The one on the left was done with environmentally friendlier techniques and supplies. Now get out your creative brains and dust off your imaginations and I'll lead you through the construction this page, step by step.

Instead of using pattern paper for your background or as an accent, try making your own with some stamps! On the not-so-green layout, I used a beautiful flocked pattern paper by Making Memories. On the "green" layout, I made my own background using Scenic Route acrylic stamps and some stamping ink.

First, you'll want to cut your template. I traced my 4x6 photo template on a piece of scrap paper and then cut it out and taped it down (lightly) where I wanted it on my background.

Lisa's Tip: I have a bunch of picture templates that I keep on hand when I am planning a layout. These are cut to sizes of pictures that I usually use (4x6, 3.5 x 5, wallet size, etc.), and I can just pull them out and place them on my background when I need to see how things are going to fit on a page. That way I also know what sizes my photos should be once I print them.

Next, choose the stamp you want to use to create your background. It should be one that is symmetrical, and can be repeated many times. Ink it up really good, and fill the space. You might want to either do a test run (so you don't wreck your background) or stamp the pattern on another sheet of leftover paper and cut it out to fit the space. Once you're done this step, you can remove your stamping template from the page.

I love using packaging on my layouts!! And I love to use ledger or lined paper as well. So the KI Memories Love Elsie line is the "Bees Knees"!!! And it's really great for those of us who like to add some journaling to our layouts. And I always have some packaging and some lined paper in my stash, which makes it easier to reach for these environmentally-friendly items when I'm in the midst of a creative burst.

For this part, I cut my Love Elsie packaging down to size and since it wasn't big enough to fit the whole space, I added some simple lined paper (leftover from when I was still in school!!). Since the lined paper is very see-through, I folded it over before I adhered it to my page. Now I can easily add journaling or my title to the space...I have built in reference lines!!

I am a big fan of creating my own embellishments. Sometimes I just can't find what I'm looking for in the store. You know...the "perfect thing." So I make my own in whatever colour and size I need to fit my layout. This is a great time and place to use "found items" and stamps.

First, I chose a 7 Gypsies label acrylic stamp set and some packaging, this time from a Scenic Route chipboard set. You'll want to use a permanent ink (like Staz-On) if you're stamping onto a glossy surface. Or you can emboss the image (try coloured embossing powder for a really fun look!). If you're really adventurous, try doodling an image...you can start simple with a circle, square, heart, squiggle line, but this can really add a personal touch to your layouts!

After I stamped the circle label, I punched it out with a slightly larger circle punch. These little guys come in handy when creating your own embellishments. They save you time and effort when you want a nice shape, or lots of them! Next, I added some colour with my red Slick Writer pen along the border of the stamped circle. These pens are great for adding some quick journaling or doodles to a gloss surface and also come in handy when labelling the back of your photos. No smudging, no streaking, and they come in a bunch of rad colours, and different-sized tips.

A "found item" (as defined by Lisa...that's me) is something that would normally be thrown out before you even considered putting it on a scrapbook layout! Something that is not a traditional scrapbook supply. For example: tags from your new shirt, the cute ad for ringtones that came in the CD you just bought, wrapping paper leftover from your daughter's birthday, etc. etc. etc. Anything can be a found item, and if you're not concerned with "acid-free", can be used on your scrapbook layouts.

On this page, my found item is the mesh bag that my oranges come in. I cut a bit off and used it as ribbon behind the stamped image. I save anything that can be used as ribbon, including "garbage" ribbon from presents and leftover tidbits from Starbucks packaging! You can always add a little ribbon to a page for some texture and visual interest. Try pop-dotting a punched-out image above your ribbon, as I did here.

Finish up with a little doodling around the edge, and voila! Your first (of many, I hope!) "green" layout!

Sneak Peek: Beyond the Page

Sneak Peek: Painting Prima

Here is a sneak peek for an upcoming class: Playing with Paint, designed by Lisa. In this class you will complete three layouts using different paint techniques and some really amazing new products!! You get to try out new Prima Paintables, Felt borders, and acrylic shapes. Amazing pattern paper by Cosmo Cricket, Little Yellow Bicycle and Jenni Bowlin and chipboard shapes from the locally-owned and operated Riff Raff Designs. This is a great class for any level of scrapbooker! Prepare to get a little messy and have a lot of fun!!
